Science Writing

Science writing includes science journalism, research report writing, manuscript writing, grant writing, proposal writing, essay writing, and so on. Science journalists translate scientific data into a digestible and sometimes narrative text that is engaging and accessible to a general audience via a credible publication. This allows the general public to be aware of new scientific discoveries and advances. More technical scientific research, however, is professionally formatted and written as a report formulated to communicate straightforward scientific data, which is targeted toward other scientists within the field.

I am a graduate of Johns Hopkins University's Master of Arts in Science Writing program, which is largely focused on scientific journalism and creative nonfiction. This required accurate reporting and in-depth research, as well as polished skills in prose writing and editing. My graduate thesis included 7 essays focusing on human health and nature. Four of these essays have been published in MotherlyThe Smart Set, Kelp Journal, and Medicine and Meaning. I will begin my tenure as a contributing editor for the program's student publication The Science Writer in August 2023.

As an undergraduate, I participated in field and laboratory research in general zoology, mammalogy, and marine biology, which required data reporting and manuscript writing according to an appropriate scientific journal's style guidelines. I advocated for more involvement from the university's writing center in assisting undergraduate science majors with developing effective writing skills. I presented my research on this topic at the 2016 Alpha Chi National Honor Society's national convention in Washington D.C.

I now have rich experience in grant writing for government and research sectors. I am currently employed as a cancer research writer for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. This entails assisting researchers and investigators on campus with manuscripts and various grant proposals; leading and participating in workshops and seminars on writing; adapting and adhering to the frequent changes to submission guidelines specified by the National Institutes of Health; and strict application of American Medical Association Style, advanced grammar, and accurate medical and scientific terminology and understanding. Prior to coming to UAMS, I was a grant specialist for the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. There, I worked on a variety of grants for programs within the tribal health systems, domestic violence department, Indian Child Welfare, cultural preservation, emergency management, housing, education, and other areas within the tribal government. I am well-versed in grants management systems such as Grants.gov, Grants Solutions, JUSTGRANTS, eRA Commons, and others. I also have experience completing required grant reports and ensure compliance with programmatic requirements in line with the funding agency.
